What is this blog about?

This is a personal blog on which I'm planning to post things related to mental health, becoming a more functional adult person, and religion and spirituality.

For pretty much my entire adult life I have dealt with chronic depression and problems with addictive behavior, mainly with spending. (I've never had issues with substance abuse; I don't even consume much caffeine.) I do talk therapy when I can (as of this writing in March 2014, I can), and I've taken a few different medications (most notably Prozac, which I am not taking currently but that might change as I get my health insurance situation sorted out), but within the scope of this blog I also want to go through some workbooks I have on acceptance and commitment therapy for both depression and addiction. I'm not really a fan of 12 step programs, but I'm interested in Charlotte Kasl's 16 step program and I own her book, Many Roads, One Journey, so I might post about that process here; I'm also looking at Pagan interpretations of the 12 steps, which tend to address some of the same issues.

Depression, financial issues, and long-term unemployment have all played a role in making it difficult for me to do a lot of things that other people take for granted, and keeping track of my progress helps keep me motivated, so I'll also be posting about some of the more mundane aspects of taking care of myself and my space, getting back to work, dealing with debts, and that sort of thing.

When it comes to religion, I'm a Unitarian Universalist, which puts me all over the map. I was raised Catholic, discovered Wicca as a teenager, and now my practice includes eclectic Neo-Pagan elements, Buddhist practices for mindfulness and compassion, progressive Christian teaching on love and service, and a ravenous curiosity about all kinds of spiritual practices. I'm particularly drawn to Athena, and other aspects of ancient Greek and Roman religion.
